These Viral RNA extraction kits are especially designed for Coronavirus (COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2) RNA Extraction. The kits simplify the isolation of viral RNA from Nasopharyngeal swabs (dry) or Viral transport medium (VTM) containing Nasopharyngeal swabs, Nasopharyngeal aspirates, and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples. The kits are available in a fast spin‐column format, or magnetic beads format where no phenol/chloroform extraction is required. Viral RNA binds specifically, while contaminants are removed in the flow‐through. PCR inhibitors such as divalent cations and proteins are completely removed, leaving pure viral RNA to be eluted in RNase‐free water. Purified RNA is ready to use in RT‐PCR detection, Northern blotting, or other downstream applications.

Viral Transport Medium (VTM) is used to collect and transport viruses in an active or inactive form to the laboratory for isolation. It is designed to maintain the viability and the virulence of the viral sample (or to keep the virus in an inactive state with it's RNA preserved) while it is transported to the laboratory.
Guanidine Thiocyanate (Guanidinium thiocyanate or guanidinium isothiocyanate), a powerful protein denaturant, is most often used to inactivate endogenous RNases in the isolation of RNA from various tissues and bacteria. When used with acid-equilibrated phenol or phenol:chloroform, a solution of Guanidine Thiocyanate and beta-mercaptoethanol are very effective in disrupting both cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes while maintaining the integrity of the RNA. In addition, Guanidine Thiocyanate is also used as a storage buffer for blood samples.
